The best way to do this would be to make sure they are an accredited outfit.  They would have to be registered with the National Diamond Verification Agency, or something similar to that name (I'm being generic as an example).

Personally I could not be happy sending my cash across the net to buy a diamond without actually seeing an appraiser verifying that it is real.  I'm too much of a skeptic.

You should at least ask your friends to see if they have ever done this and get some tips before you begin. 

If you do your homework, and know what to look for, you can buy a great stone from the grading report. Just make sure that the stone you buy will fit the setting before you buy.

You really should be careful where your buying it from the internet but if you do your homework and learn the about the cuts, claritys and colors you should be okay with finding the best diamond for you. You might even want to go to the potential jewelers that might set your ring and show them your grandmothers mounting and ask them for the proper measurements so you can buy the right size diamond. We've taken measurements and given an education about diamonds, it's really important to make sure you get exactly what was listed and described. Once you've purchased it, definitely take it to a jeweler so the can take a look at it. Hope that helped!

 If you go to the right vendors - Blue Nile, Whiteflash, GOG are all credible diamond online retailers which handle their customers as well as if you were standing right in front of them!  The combination of imbedding one piece that has sentimental value, and another that makes it more personal is actually done frequently.  Taking the stone into a jeweler is definitely a smart move because they will give you ideas about what would best fit your stone.

As long as you purchase from a reputable online jeweler such as Blue Nile, Mondera, Adiamor, or Lumera Diamonds (where I am employed), purchasing a loose diamond will significantly expand your options (a typical jewelery store can't afford to carry more than a few hundred diamonds on the premises, whereas many online jewelers show over 50,000 choices) as well as reduce your cost (online jewelers typically charge less because they have lower costs.  No fancy stores, ranks of commission sales people...).

From what I have always seen, the engagement ring goes on the right hand until marriage and then it can be worn behind the band. I'm no expert. Why does your Groom believe it to be the left hand? I wonder if he is correct! I am getting confused myself now.

Very interesting Dissertation Topic. I love the ring made of diamond!!I noticed the clarity in the center diamond - I can always spot a colorless when I see one.  It's beautifully clear.  The cushion cut is a nice fit with the Halo.  Very, very classy! I have learnt How to write an essay.
