Windex Toothbrush and Water

goth bride's picture

Hi,

My mom told me that the best way to clean your diamond is by using hot water to soak off the dirt and then soak it in Windex and scrub with a soft toothbrush.  Do you think this is safe?

Ring maintenence

Diamonds are very tough and resilliant, so Windex will probably not perminently affect its sparkle. I wouldn't recomment using it on rings, however. I have been told by jewelers the safest way to clean your ring is soak it in a container of hot water and a small amount of dish soap. Once it has set, scrub gently with a soft bristled tooth bruth, then rinse well. I also know people that use a blowdryer to dry the ring so lint and hair does not get stuck in the prongs, which might happen if you used a paper towel or regular towel to dry it. I think less is more with cleaning, and as long as you clean your ring routinely and make sure to clean the underside of the diamond near the prongs(stuff seems to accumulate there), your ring will be beautiful. Occasionally, it wouldnt hurt to break down and take your ring in, at least 1-2 times a year, to a jeweler to let them clean it and inspect the settings of the diamond.
