The Engagement Rings of Hollywood
Hollywood engagement rings has a distinctive tone to it that is almost similar to the engagement rings worn by big celebrities in a real-life scenario. A lot of Hollywood movies have created a wave of interest in the brides-to-be in the film as far as fashion and flair are concerned. For some reason, people are associating the romantic love stories with happy endings in most of Hollywood movies to their lives, if and when they decide to get the ring that was used for props in the screenplay.
Hollywood Jewelry Defined
The term 'Hollywood jewelry' pertains to the rings or the pieces of jewelry featured in a particular TV show or movie. The characters in the film usually wear them as they are about to get married, if it were engagement rings. These pieces are very much unlike the actual engagement rings of the celebrities where in the make, the cut, the carat, and the price is usually a closely held secret. The Hollywood versions, on the other hand, are usually flaunted for everybody to see. And that is primarily because of these reasons:
1. The jeweler who created the piece is also the sponsor of the TV show or movie. Therefore, it is only proper that they are given good publicity.
2. The TV show or the movie itself want to stimulate interest in the viewers by promoting the design, allure, and expense of the jewelry as worn by the main character of the story.
3. The jewelers, company, or the sponsors are creating an exclusive line of signature jewelry pieces that will be made available to the viewers later on.
The Symbolism of Hollywood Engagement Rings
Whether the film is created by an independent company or by a major movie outfit, the jewelry used in it is carefully selected so that it matches the plot, the character, the tempo, and the overall message of the movie. Without much explanation, Hollywood jewelry is highly symbolic in nature. The engagement rings used usually represents the deeper themes that the movie is trying to impart to its audience.
Character Symbolism
A good example of the character symbolism of Hollywood engagement rings as adapted in the movies can be easily observed in the two installments of Legally Blonde. The first Legally Blonde featured Reese Witherspoon desperate to have the pear-shaped, large carat Harry Winston engagement ring that was originally owned by her boyfriend's grandmother. But of course, Reese's character in the story is not, in any way, the traditional type of girl that regards family ancestry, heirlooms, and old money very highly. In the movie, Elle Woods, the character played by Reese Witherspoon, never got that ring as an engagement ring or for anything else.
In the second Legally Blonde movie however, Reese is engaged to another person, an unconventional lawyer who sees her unique personality rather lovely. And the engagement ring that was used was a large, oval-shaped pink diamond – something that was more like her. Brilliant accents stones are flanked on the sides of the central ring too.
Theme Symbolism
In other Hollywood movies, engagement rings are more than an element to a character's personality. It can actually symbolize a deeper theme in the film. For example, in the film Armageddon, a very simple round-shaped diamond solitaire ring was used as Ben Affleck's engagement ring for Liv Tyler. The context of the story was that the world is on the verge of destruction and Ben Affleck is out in the open trying to prevent that from happening. The simple engagement ring used in the story symbolizes the beauty and simplicity of love amidst life's most difficult situations.
