GIA certification in UK

Helenish's picture

Greetings all!

Could anyone suggest  a reputable business where I could have my loose diamond appraised with a GIA certificate in London, England?

We purchased the stone in Australia and it has come with a jeweller supplied EGL cert;     Asscher, 1.09ct, F, VVS2   which values it at $6000 over what we paid for it.....?? (Jeweller's prerogative?)

I absolutely love the stone so it is mostly out of curiosity I want the grading but also for insurance.

Our London jeweller can't set the diamond until the end of August so I would also like to know if it's better to have this done while the stone is still loose.

♥ Many thanks! ♥

GIA diamond certification

Hi H!

As someone who has been doing lots and lots of engagement ring research, I do know that you should have a GIA diamond grading report done before having the stone set.  GIA only certifies loose diamonds.  As far as places in the UK are concerned, I'm not sure where you should take your diamond, but this website may help:  http://www.gia.edu/lab-reports-services/how-to-submit-gems/index.html.

I'd definitely recommend getting a GIA diamond certification - GIA is independent and non-profit, so you can be sure that they give you an accurate assessment of your diamond's 4 Cs.  With something as significant as a diamond ring, you want to be sure that you know what you have!  And the report can be used for insurance, as you mentioned.

Good luck!

Helenish,

As you may already be aware, EGL international certs are a bit notorious for flexible grading; meaning they will tend to assign higher grades to a diamond (particularly in color and clarity) than reputable labs such as GIA and AGS.  So, don't be surprised if your diamond is assigned a lower grade by GIA.

That said, from the diamond description you gave, I can tell you that we would sell a diamond of that quality for between $4200-$5800 (US Dollars).  The variance depends on other factors like cut, polish, symmetry, fluorescence, and other measures.  If you would like a more precise value, use this free diamond price quote.  You input the info on the diamond, and then receive an emailed  price quote for a diamond that matches your criteria.  The quote can come in handy when you are negotiating on price, or are just curious about a diamond you already own.

GIA will only certify your diamond if you send it to them loose.  Another option would be to have it appraised by a GIA graduate gemologist. This can be done after the diamond is set, although it's more accurate when the diamond is loose.  Here is some good information on what to look for in a diamond appraisal and diamond appraiser.

Good Luck,
