asscher diamonds- i am obsessed!

diana682's picture

sorry- another post! i just wanted to say how much i have fallen in love with the asscher cut.  its stunning. i however, have never seen one in person.  does anyone have an asscher or know much about them? are they amazing in person? i am just curious as to how others feel about them.  also a quick question- is it true that if you get an asscher of a given carat weight- it will appear smaller than a ring of a different cut but same carat weight? if so, how much smaller?

thanks!

I love Asscher's myself!

I love Asscher's myself! Although I'm not engaged yet, I got to pick out my loose asscher shaped diamond and will not be able to see the finished product until the actual proposal. Here are some websites that help alot on the things you were looking for. Hope it helps!

P.S- Clarity and the Color are especially important on an Asscher cut. The one I picked out is a 1.03 VVS2 F with Excellent Polish and symmetry.

thanks! yes, asschers are so

thanks! yes, asschers are so gorgeous. i am not yet engaged but we have been talking about getting engaged in the next year. i am just beginning to research rings and its so fun. i am debating between the asscher solitaire on a platinum band versus a pave band. what are you thinking for yourself?

They do not carry Asschers,

They do not carry Asschers, but they do carry what's called a Lucida cut. It's their own patented cut diamonds. It's a cross between a cushion and princess if i remember correctly. Very pretty and "sparkly" in person, however Tiffany's is really expensive  -

What do you think?  Its gorgeous isnt it?  BTW if you're going to do all the research, we'd love to hear if there truley is a difference between an Asscher and a Square Emerald Cut.  Supposedly, one is a variation of the other, but I cant tell the difference

bianca- wow! i am drooling

diana682's picture

bianca- wow! i am drooling over this ring.  a part of me is obsessed with pave, and a part of me feels that an asscher is so pretty that it maybe best all on its own on a plain platinum band

from what i've read, it seems that an asscher is the same exact thing as a square emerald (length to width ratio as close to 1.00 as possible)  but that there is another type of stone called a "royal asscher" which is  an asscher with additional facets.  i would love to check these out in person and see the difference.

i live in NYC and am wondering- how do i go about seeing these types of rings in person? i have read that asschers are harder to find.  (though i'd imagine in NYC it shouldnt be too hard).  can i just walk into a standard jewelry store and ask to see one? i dont think tiffany's carries asschers (tiffany's seems like the easiest place to go with the largest selection but i think i may need to search elsewhere)

thanks!

diana

i just found this article

diana682's picture

i just found this article which says there are slight differences between asscher and square emerald. i am reading all sorts of different things all over the web! i am just not 100% sure what the real facts are....

Hey Diana,   When I first

travelguru168's picture

Hey Diana,

When I first when ring shopping, I went into Tiffany's just to get the "experience". They do not carry Asschers, but they do carry what's called a Lucida cut. It's their own patented cut diamonds. It's a cross between a cushion and princess if i remember correctly. Very pretty and "sparkly" in person, however Tiffany's is really expensive ( they mark up EVERYTHING because of those cute blue boxes). I was looking at a .92 D-F VVS2 on a plain platinum band and it was a little over 12,000. In my mind I think its a little crazy, because experienced local jewelers can get you a bigger stone with comparable qualities and custom designs for less. Make sure they have a licensed gemologist on hand and you should be in good hands. Too bad your all the way up in NYC, or I would introduce you to my jeweler. He's fabulous!!

thanks travelguru!  so its

diana682's picture

thanks travelguru!  so its not wierd to walk into any old jewelry store and try on lots of rings without the intention of buying one anytime soon? i dont want to seem annoying.  i figured at the larger chain stores it would be easier to do this, but like i said, tiffanys does not carry the asscher.  i am also wondering if the smaller stores will be guaranteed to have a large selection of asschers to look at

I don't think it is. It's a

travelguru168's picture

I don't think it is. It's a huge investment and you really want to see how everything looks on your finger. It's also a great time to get your finger measurements too. Since your in NYC, definitely go to the diamond district and examine the diamonds when their loose and not in settings yet. It's the best way to see flaws/inclusions under a microscope. I'm not familiar with any of the stores in the diamond district, but I think a lot of the girls here would be happy to help. Make sure you find someone that has your best interests at hand and not just there to "pressure" you to buy just anything.

PS- i like the pave look too :)

good quality

jgengo's picture

When my fiance and I went ring shopping we looked at asschers as well as cushion cuts. We sat with an amazing jeweler, Bruce from Amerigem. He honestly talked to us for 2 hours about diamonds.
Bruce said the only bad thing with the asscher cut is that you have to get a great quality diamond, due to the fact that there are only a few facets. He said it is rare to find a great asscher below G for color  and VSI. I guess imperfections are more easily noticeable with asschers, then again that is through a jeweler's eye. We ended up going with a cushion cut. The cushion sparkled a million times more than the asscher (which to me seemed quite dull), but I am a person who likes sparkly things. Asschers do look very regal though!

p.s

jgengo's picture

P.s- If you randomly go to a jewelry store chances are they will not have a asscher on hand for you to look at. Give a couple jewelers a call and tell them you want to come in to view asschers. My fiance and I called the jeweler beforehand and he was more than happy to order in a couple for us to look at.

i live in new york city- do

diana682's picture

i live in new york city- do you think id have a good chance of finding an asscher in the diamond district? i feel like if they dont have asschers, no one will!

Iowa

jgengo's picture

I currently live in Iowa, so if Iowa jewelers can come by asschers NY has got to have them!

Jewelers often work with dealers too. So all they have to do is call up their dealer and have a couple asschers ordered in!

Asscher Diamonds

Cushionluvr's picture

If you're serious about getting an asscher, definitely look at them in person before buying.  Diamonds by Lauren is in the Diamond District in NY, and he's extremely knowledgeable about diamonds and great to work with. I'm sure if you call him, he would be happy to make an appointment with you.  He carries all shapes, colors and sizes of asschers as well as other diamonds.

I purchased my asscher from

I purchased my asscher from Diamond Wholesale Corp. in Canada and I love it. I designed a customr ring and had it made in Mexico and it came out stunning.

NY Diamonds are amazing!

DontYa1103's picture

My Ring is a 3.19 ct Radiant Emerald cut, it took Rob and I almost a year to find the right  one, but we found it in the Diamond District in NY they have everything you could possibly dream of! I would for sure go there to see Asscher Cuts, we saw a few beautiful ones on the road to my ring...  GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HUNTING!

thanks for the info!  can

diana682's picture

thanks for the info!  can you tell me a little bit more about how your experience in the diamond district was? do you just wander from store to store? or do you need special appointments to check out what they have? also are most of the diamonds set already or are they loose?

thanks :)

diana

Depends

DontYa1103's picture

I am a total planner, so I did call a few places and ask them if they had some on hand, they were nice enough to reccomend other places to that had what we were looking for. I would just go down for the day and go from place to place. If there is some on that specializes in that cut they will tell you. Look online a little before you head bout though, I found the whole process really daunting and overwhelming at first. I wasnt sure though I kept changing my mind... I wanted a pear then I wanted an Asscher then I wanted a Step cut Emerald... Then I saw the Radiant Emerald and was smitten! Happy Hunting!

ALSO

DontYa1103's picture

Sorry I forgot to say that there are a great selection of loose ans set stones but mostly loose...

here is a link to the website that lists all of the stores and their contact info www.diamonddistrict.org

Hope that helps!

This may seem like a tough question, but it can be answered by using one thing: a GIA Diamond Grading Report. The GIA Diamond Grading Report was created in the interest of the consumer, as an unbiased, astute, accurate and scientific evaluation of diamonds based on the 4Cs. I got the GIA Diamond Grading Report when I bought my diamond for my girlfriend, in order to know exactly what I was paying for when it came to quality and authenticity. I suggest you do the same.

Christmas Gift Ideas

Christmas Gifts's picture

The "Asscher cut diamond" was developed in 1902 by the Asscher Brothers of Holland. It is a stepped square cut, often called the "square emerald cut" and like an emerald cut, the Asscher has cropped corners. Until recently this cut was only available in a few stores, but thanks to television shows like "Sex in the City" their popularity has increased. This in turn has led to more stores carrying this fashionable cut.
