Your Best Bets

Your best bets for purchasing online are:

Blue Nile, as you mentioned.  You can trust that what you receive will be just as described.  These guys have a great and well deserved reputation.  Only downside from my perspective is the ring will not be very unique (they have a fairly narrow selection and a lot of sales).

Union Diamond. Great prices, decent selection.  You will get a little more personal service here than bluenile, and possibly a better price.

Lumera Diamonds. Ok, I am biased.  But, if you do a comparison of like-for-like diamonds (I would be happy to help you with this) you will find it is hands down the best price on diamonds.  And, every diamond is GIA certified (most jewelry stores like to slip in EGL or other lesser certifications to help them hit price points), comes with a 30 day return, and a guarantee that says it will appraise at or higher than you paid, or your money back plus $100.  They are not a jeweler, they are a diamond seller (although they will place your diamond in a solitaire for presentation purposes.  That means better prices and selection on diamonds, but the intent is that you would then have the diamond set by a local jeweler in a setting you choose elsewhere (online or at a store).  Here is more info on buying an engagement ring diamond first.

Truly though, you won't go wrong with any of the three, even if you decide you need to discount the last option because of my relationship with them.  The other two I have no affiliation with at all.  Hope that helps.

I'd have to vouch for Blue Nile as well

I bought my ring from Blue Nile. I chose a color E, VS2 Ideal Cut Diamond with a 18K white gold setting.

I went to my local high end jeweler and he didnt even have an e color diamond. His best was a F and he charged $1500 more than Blue Nile did.

Their service was great and the ring is beautiful.

Highly recommended. I even built a website with my story.

Thanks of the links. My fiance has been looking on line for both a wedding ring and a wedding reception venue. It is tough out there.

Credible Diamond & Engagement Ring Companies Online

Engagement Rings By Secret Diamond's picture

Blue Nile is certainly a credible company. However there are many others too. The first thing I would look for in an online diamond company, is whether they belong to the Better Business Bureau in their community. If they do, you will most likely see a BBB Logo on their website proudly displayed, like ours. After you see the BBB logo, make sure to click on it because it should take you directly to their BBB report page. This will tell you if there are any complaints against the company and give you a pretty good idea how they run their business. If the BBB logo in not clickable, it may just be a broken link, or they may be trying to fool you. It is not difficult to just place a stolen picture of the BBB logo on their website. So make sure it takes you to their page that is actually on the BBB website. If the BBB logo is not a clickable link or picture, you should call the BBB in their community and verify if they are a member, and ask to see the report on their business.

As far as getting a good price on a certified diamond. The diamonds that you see on all of the websites out there are actually diamonds that do not belong to them. The diamond inventory actually belongs to the diamond cutters throughout the world that is uploaded to 2 different, national wholesale diamond databases. The retail website that is listing the diamonds is just paying a company that maintains the database for the right to list those diamonds on their website. The more diamonds that you list on your website, the more it costs per month to do so. That's why some companies will have 25,000 diamonds listed, and other companies may have as many as 100,000 diamonds listed. I can assure you that not a single retail diamond company online has that many diamonds in their own personal inventory. If you pay close attention, many times you will find exactly the same diamond on more than one website. The only difference in price is due to different mark-ups that the companies are charging. If you are purchasing a GIA or EGL certified diamond from a reputable company online that belongs to their local Better Business Bureau Chapter and they are in good standing with them, you can be rest assured that you will be safe with your purchase.
