So I have this princess cut ring, it is square and good size…
on the inside the numbers 1.02 are engraved on it. Does this mean that it is a carat and 2/100 of a carat???
it also says 14k.
it also has a 5 digit number which I believe to be the serial number.

1.02 does sound like a carat weight. If there are other numbers they may refer to the purity of the metal used in the band or the specific setting style, etc.
It varies depending on maker. If there are other markings, let me know and I may have a more detailed answer.
– edit: yep 14K for the purity of the gold used (you will also see things like .925 for silver, etc.. Have your jewelry looked at by a local jewelry store if you want more details on the piece or confirmation on the numbers.
