• My engagement ring and wedding band don’t fit together. Opinions?

I am getting married in May and recently my fiance and I went shopping for a wedding band that would fit with my engagement ring (which I LOVE!). Unfortunately, because my engagement ring curves on the side, no wedding band will fit up with it exactly unless we get one custom made which is quite expensive.

We decided to buy a band that curved in hopes that it would fit good enough with my engagement ring. I just got the wedding band back from the jeweler after getting sized and there is quite a bit of space between my engagement ring and wedding band when I wear them. I was just wondering, does anybody else have this problem? I love both the rings, but I guess I just always pictured in my head that they would fit together perfectly. Any opinions/suggestions? Thanks.

Here is a picture of the rings together: http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa26/akgarcia2005/ring/closeup.jpg
(and yes, I know I am wearing them on the wrong hand, I did that on purpose for the picture lol)
Thanks to all of you who responded. I took both my rings back to the jeweler today and they told me that if I decided to have my rings soldered after the wedding (which I had planned on doing anyway), they could make them look nicer together. They explained to me that in order to do this, they would cut two "notches" into the wedding band so that the prongs on my engagement ring have a place to "settle", then they would solder the rings together. They said the rings won’t fit flush up against one another but it will look better than it does now. Has anybody had this done before? It makes me a little nervous to cut into the wedding band but I guess they are the experts…

Gee, I am sorry, but I think you made a real mistake with this wedding band.
What you needed was a guard/enhancer/wrap which allowed space for the emerald cut to fit, if you couldn’t get a thin band which would sit flush under it.
    Something like -

This emerald cut has a matching band -

Bands with a dip that fit the emerald cut - just to give you an idea of the shapes -

Didn’t you wear your engagement ring when u tried on your wedding band?

  • Wuviewoo 5:08 am on December 10, 2009 |

That actually doesn’t look bad because unless you get the two rings joined together by a jewler they are going to move around and seperate away from each other just from normal wear anyway

the wedding band looks like it came from a set where they both fit together (not with your engagement ring). try giving them both to your jeweler and showing him how they do not fit and see if he can reshape them so they do. or you might have to reset you engagement ring all together.

Although both are beautiful rings, you’re right–they don’t mesh well together.
I would suggest looking online (assuming you know your solitares dimensions) and trying to find a new setting for your engagement ring. This would be the most affordable option.
Another option would be to go to a good jeweler and see what settings they can do. Best if the work will be done "in-house". This way you can speak to the jeweler himself and see his suggestions.
    Best of luck, and congrats!

ask your jeweler if they can be attacked at the bottom

I am also having that same problem…..engagment ring differnt shape from wedding ring and wedding ring is alot bigger than engagemnt ring…….huge space in the middle.
I absolutly love both my rings, but i have come to the conclusion…i just cant wear them both on the same hand.
I figure i will just wear my wedding ring on my left hand and the engagment ring on my right.
thats the best i can come up with……..its too expensive to have a jewler do something with them.

They are both beautiful rings but i see what you mean.
They still do look nice together but you could talk to a jeweler and see if he could sort something out for you like a new setting. Talk about what you want as cheap as he can do it for. Shop around talk to a few jewelers.

My engagement ring is a two stone by pass with a ‘point’ at both the north & south positions on my finger (where each stone sits)

No way would I be able to get a band that nestles up close unless custom made….

My original band is a plain polished one…lucky for me one of the ‘points’ overlaps the band so I have no gaps…..

If your stone sat higher than it does (high prong setting) then there wouldn’t be such an issue….a good jeweler might be able to make that modification for you….or when you have the cash see if there’s a ring guard style band your diamond can be inserted into….a wee bit of space in that case is forgivable, really.

lol you can always talk him into getting another duplicate band to wear on the other side of the engagement ring for a ring guard look lol….bet that will work….good luck.

I dont think it looks bad. I dont want my wedding band to curve around my engagement ring in case i ever want to just wear the wedding bad so mine is going to look the same. i actually kind of like it better that way, you can see that you have two separate rings. but that is my personal opinion. if it really bothers you though take it to a jeweler and see what ideas they have.

Perhaps I should have bypassed answering this question because I took the shallow route- I picked out another ring. First I’ll say that your rings are beautiful but don’t settle if you don’t love it. You will have to look at it every day of your life & people who say it doesn’t matter usually have crappy rings. (Sorry, but it’s true.) Yours look nice to me, but it will always be about how YOU feel when you see it & if it’s something you’re proud of.
My first engagement ring was a beautiful, vintage inspired round shape that was engraved & beautiful & didn’t fit a darn thing when it came to bands. By the time this became apparent, I was attached to the ring & there was no way I was letting it go…until we saw the cost of a custom band. By the time the jeweler matched the pave diamonds and the engraving, we were looking at more than three times the cost of the original ring. So I chose a solitaire that I loved & my (now) husband picked a band he to compliment it (because almost anything matches a solitaire) & he gave me both at our wedding. My prior engagement ring is now a right hand ring. Yay! It all worked out. Expensively, I might add, but I was lucky & I have the ring(s) of my dreams.

My problem is virtually identical to yours. My center stone is slightly more rectangle shaped than yours (which appears to be a nice square).

After alot of discussion - and learning that the custom made wedding band just isn’t an option at this time due to cost - we agreed that my engagement ring would move to my right hand and the wedding band would be alone on my left hand.

Its not what I really wanted, but neither of us thought about wedding bands when discussing engagement rings and the cost is just so prohibitive to have a band custom made.

There is no reason why your engagement ring can’t be your wedding ring. I know some people who just have one ring and the engagement ring becomes the wedding rings at the ceremony.

If you can return the wedding ring return it. It looks like it belongs to another set.

If you want a wedding and engagement ring, perhaps a plain band would work. It looks like your engagement ring was intended to be with a plain band.

It doesn’t fit flush, but it’s close enough that it still looks good. I wouldn’t worry about it. You can always upgrade in the future.
