What are the advantages to buying a 1 carat Tiffany’s solitaire ring?
02:57:02 pm on November 23, 2009 | by bianca |
Tiffany’s lowest end 1 carat solitaire sells for ,300 and is set in an 18K yellow gold band. I don’t even think you have the option for white gold. I am not certain on the diamond specs but I would imagine that diamond would be VS2 and maybe within the G-H color range. Are you just paying for the name?
I know plenty of stores that sell a 1 carat solitaire, maybe SI1 and within the G-H color range for under 3 grand. These rings are set in an 18K yellow or white gold band.
,000 is a lot of money just so your fiance can go around saying she has an engagement ring from Tiffany’s…

You hit the nail on the head - you’re paying for the opportunity to say the ring is from Tiffany’s. Once it’s on her finger, there’s no way of knowing what store a diamond came from.
Unless the brand is really important to you, save your money and get a ring from a place where you’re paying for the quality of the stone, not the blue box.

whiteflash (online) has a tiffany knife edge solitaire that is very nice. ask the people at website pricescope to help you select a stone.

THe only advantage is you’re getting the brand name.
My husband and I considered Tiffany’s for my engagement ring (we sort of shopped together). We looked at a .4 carat H/VS2 diamond for about $8000. He went to a local jeweler and was able to get a .75 carat F/VS1 diamond for about $4000. Which do you think is more worth it?
One suggestion: I wouldn’t consider anything below SI range in quality and ideally, you want VS range because its awesome quality and because it’s not perfect, you’re not paying the high price tag. Personally, I feel H is a little low in the color spectrum for me. Go to a store that will order diamonds for you because what most stores (especially chains) stock in their stores are low quality.
If you must go to a store, make it a local store. You’ll get better quality for the price there. As far as affordable chain stores go, Zales, if you are very careful when selecting the ring, has some decent stuff, although when I was looking at my local Zales, they refused to help me.
Some good websites/ examples of nice rings that are equal or better quality than Tiffany for much less money:

Just an FYI about "blood diamonds," if you’ve done your research about them, you’d know it is nearly impossible to purchase a "blood diamond" any more. Google the Kimberly Process and it will explain how most of the world has come together to stop the occurance of "blood diamonds."

There is no advantage. But you do pay lot for the name. Once people see it, they will say, "Wow!" Then they will snicker behind your back about how much you spent on a name!
You can do better elsewhere.
I got my wife’s ring at Diamond Brokers of Florida:

Or you could check out these other online sources:

http://www.BlueNile.com
Blue Nile’s database is good, but they don’t provide you with photos or analysis reports of the diamond. I wouldn’t go with them for that reason.
Happy hunting.

Ok, first of all, you cannot just put a discount diamond ring in a Tiffany’s box and not tell the difference. Anyone who looks at a ring from a mall store and a ring from Tiffany would have to literally be blind to not see the difference.
Whether or not the money is worth it to you is a personal decision. Personally, my ring is from Tiffany and I love it. Would I have been happy with a ring pop if it came from my husband? Yes. There is a difference in quality, though. Yes, you are probably paying a premium for the name, but do you think Louis Vuitton could charge what they do if their bags fell apart after a week? People wouldn’t pay it. Same goes for Tiffany. If people didn’t see value in their superior quality, no would pay the prices.
Some people will pay a premium for quality and some people won’t. It totally depends on your perspective.

I personally have a Tiffany’s ring. Here’s the gist of things, yes, the name comes with a price, however, a VS1 or VVS1 is MUCH more worth a SI1 because in a SI1, when you’re looking directly into the jewel you will see either feathering or dark spots which are carbon. The G-H color range isn’t that great either, I don’t believe I’ve seen a Tiffany’s lower then a F range, but then again, they may have it and not showcase it. I have a white gold band, it wasn’t specially priced for the band either. I don’t go around saying I have a Tiffany’s ring. My ring is a bit larger then what you’re talking about but because the cut of the actual ring and the band are particularly noticable, people already know where my ring comes from. If you want to go to another store, try to stick with these guidelines. Nothing under a VS2 (VVS=Very Very slight inclusions, VS=Very Slight inclusions, SI= Slight Inclusions I= Inclusions. Inclusions are the feathering or black spots that can be seen in the diamond), try to stick with a D, E, or F in color, and try to get something with around 80 cuts in the diamond so that the light will refract better through the diamond making it much more blingy and bright. I had my diamond recut to 102 (but then again, we know people with mines.) and in a movie theatre it catches the attention of people behind me because it catches any kind of light and reflects it through.

Tiffanys is grossly overpriced but your fiance will get to say that her ring is from Tiffanys. In all honesty, you can purchase a ring of equal quality from a local jeweler for a fraction of the price.

That is a lot of money of course i wanted a tiffanys ring too but i got a beautiful bigger ring and i love it! I am sure she will get over that its not from tiffanys!

Is it even a pretty ring? Or is it just a boring band and a diamond in the middle without any special or unique detailing? I don’t think there are any advantages of getting a ring like that. Go for pretty, not for the brand name!

Please don’t buy a blood diamond. That is to say, get a diamond that doesn’t help support the DeBeers cartel. There are lots of non-conflict diamonds available - and canada is a good source. Start your marriage right with a clear conscience.

Buy a ring from another store and put it in a Tiffany’s box. She will never know!
acedelux 2:57 pm on November 23, 2009 |
Do not fall for that stupid rule that the engagement ring should cost 1 & 1/2 to 3 times your monthly salary. The right engagement ring is a ring that has a special meaning behind it; not some "rock" that she can flaunt to her friends just to say "Look what my man got me!".
By the way, if the engagement does not work out, she does not have to give it back. So think wisely about what you buy. Can you afford to risk up to three times your monthly salary for a ring she may not give back?
iLoveLifeć 2:57 pm on November 23, 2009 |
I wouldn’t do it. I just bought an engagement ring from http://www.bluenile.com and I’m waiting to get it delivered. Go on that website and check out the prices for a one carat diamond. Also use the coupon code DMDS49 to save $100 on an diamond ring. Free shipping too!! Also if you get a ring just below 1 carat, you can save alot of money because more people buy rings that are exactly 1 carat, then rings that are .96 carat. You’ll never tell the difference.
As far as the advantages of buying a Tiffany’s ring.. You are paying for the name, metal is metal, and diamonds are just shiny rocks no matter where you buy them. Just make sure you get a GIA or some type of certificate.
