The most suitable is to take it to a jeweler or a repair store. It doesn’t have to be a big store- sometimes there are very talented jewelers in kiosks in your local mall that will polish and steam clean your jewelry for around $10-$15.

If you have the piece polished, as opposed to just steam cleaning it, the scratches will come out. Polishing is just like buffing the first, outer layer of the metral, thus removing those small scratches. If you have deeper ones, they will not be as noticeable, but depending on how deep they are, they might not come out completely.

Also, you want to avoid attempting to clean your jewelry at home with those do-it-at-home solutions you can buy. Most of those chemicals get stuck in the little grooves in the jewelry, and in the end, you just won’t be happy with the results. There is nothing that compares to a professional steam cleaning, and if you have set-in dirt, the jeweler might put your jewelry in an ultrasonic bath for a few minutes to loosen up the dirt and grime before steaming. Also do not use soap and water; if you must clean something yourself, use a soft bristled toothbrush and regular white colgate toothpaste and LIGHTLY brush the piece. Please note that you can only do this if you are cleaning a regular piece of jewelry with no stones, or if the only stones are diamonds, as any other stones might get damaged because they are too soft for this.

You can buy certain machines to clean gold jewelry, but they’re not worth it unless you intend to use them very often. As has been said before, taking it to a store for professional cleaning is probably the best thing to do. You can find more about it at my site if you’re interested.
