Where to find a cheap engagement ring?
11:01:08 am on February 28, 2010 | by bianca |
My boyfriend and I just got engaged but we do not have a lot of money and want to buy an engagement ring. We live in the state of Maryland so we are trying to find either a local jewelry store or a website that sells real diamond rings for inexpensive prices. Anyone have any tips?

Finding the perfect engagement ring that is still within your price range can be easily achieved by having your ring customized specifically for you. By doing that, you get to choose the type of gold/white gold band to use, daimond K, and the design that you like.
ADIAMOR is an online store and a manufacturer as well. They have over 90k loose diamonds to choose from, which I’m sure you’ll be able to find the perfect one for your style. They’ll also email you a wide range of designs so you’ll only get the "exact" (means design & price) ring you prefer.
To verify their credibility: check for their BBB rating, verisign seal, and testimonials found in their site site and bizrate.

Overstock has a wide selection of rings at many different price points. Their shipping is always very reasonable and they have protection plans.

What is your price range? I got my ring for 1,900.00 at Zales. I opened up a Zales card and put it on there so we pay it off monthly with no interest for 12 months.

Diamonds are expensive because they are artificially rare. By this I mean that there are plenty of diamonds in existence to make them plentiful and cheap, but people who stand to make a lot of money in the diamond trade restrict the flow of diamonds; by only letting a limited amount into the market, they are able to keep diamond prices high.
That said, if you are willing to look at stones like emeralds, sapphires, and amethysts, you can find a beautiful ring at a fraction of the cost of a diamond. If you are still set on getting a diamond, here is a site that lets you pick one within your budget and have it set in a ring: http://www.brilliantearth.com/rings/cyorings/search_diamond/?first=diamond

Funny you asked this - I just came from Wal Mart and looked at their engagement rings for fun. They have some BEAUTIFUL ones for VERY cheap. I was very shocked at the quality. Good luck

Just look around at local family-owned businesses. When I got engaged, I lived in Indiana, Pennsylvania. There was a nice store called Lorelli’s, and my husband got a fantastic ring for me inexpensively. It’s white gold custom shaped band with a .3 carat diamond (great C.C.C. too!) for about $800. (It’s also certified, appraised and a non-blood diamond.) I know a lot of people think that around a quarter carat is too small, but I have size 4 fingers and it looks great to me! It all depends on your personal preference.

Perhaps you could buy a nice dimonique one off of qvc.com (around 150 bucks!), and just use it for now. Since you don’t have a lot of money, I don’t think that blowing 2 grand on a ring is going to be that smart. Agree to perhaps replace it in 5 years, or when you can. There’s no point in going into debt over a ring.

Mary,
The answer to your question is simple
You should definitely look into buying your ring online.
I recommend http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/ or http://design.jared-diamonds.com/engagement-rings/?Nic=0.
The reason it is better to buy a diamond engagement ring online is because online diamond retailers have much less overhead that jewelry stores do. That means that you can find the exact same ring online that you would in a store… but for up to 50% less. Plus, good sites offer free shipping, free resizing, excellent customer service and a full cash back guarantee.
I bought my now-wife a James Allen engagement ring and we were both super pleased with the purchase. She simply loves her ring, and I really enjoyed presenting her with it. It was delivered straight to my front door and came in a gorgeous presentation box. Needless to say… I got a lot of brownie points.
Seriously, give online a try - you have nothing to lose and you’ll thank me that you did.
Good luck Mary!

Just answered a similar question and the same answer applies here so:
I actually purchased my fiancees engagement ring from the US (we’re from Australia), it was white gold stacking rings with a black diamond in the middle. My fiancee wanted something unique and it was very reasonably priced.
Make sure you know your ring size and go to a jeweller if you need to check.
Online places are cheap though because they don’t have shops to maintain, and staff to pay. Take advantage of it is my opinion, you can get the same quality as reputable companies for muc, much cheaper.
http://www.silver-wedding-rings.com is a good place to start.
Good luck!

Congratulations! When’s the big day? Well, my fiance & I had the same problem. There’s nothing wrong with getting something for now, and upgrading a few years later. We wanted something nice, but still affordable. Why don’t you guys go to a few different places and ask about layaway, that way, you can still get something nice without breaking the bank. Good luck.

Amazon has a Create Your Own Ring tool that enables you to select every aspect of the ring, including price. The best thing about the Create Your Own Ring tool is that you can often get a higher quality diamond at a lower price than anywhere else.
Here’s a few rings I made that are under $600 (all center stones are H/SI1 or better in quality and are more than .25 carats):

If you are not concerned with quality, go to a low end retailer like Kay or Walmart. At either store you can get really low quality diamonds for very cheap.

Your best bet is a site like http://www.adiamor.com. They have the best prices on diamond engagement rings and there are a couple of great payment options that allow you to pay off the ring over time. The worst thing you could do is shop at a mall store! The overhead at mall stores is ridiculous, they pay for security, commercial decor, and an insane amount of money on rent! In order to make a profit they tack on money to their customers.
With a site like Adiamor you have a couple of great payment options. One is called Bill Me Later and they have a 90 day promotion with no interest and then PayPal which allows you to pay over time if you apply for a certain account.
Do your research and you will see that their prices are the best and they have great policies! 30 day return and exchange if you’re not satisfied.
Good luck and congratulations!

Wal Mart, Sam’s Club, Overstock.com, go to a pawn shop (some beautiful pieces and estate pieces cheap), JC Penney usually has a bunch of rings on sale, too; Zales. com

If your budget is between $1500-$2000 that’s enough to find a nice but delicate solitaire. Go for quality on the center stone as this will give you the best long term value on your ring. The internet will be your best bet. You can get a lot of the same value on the internet as you can locally. Check out different diamond forums first to see who is the best on the net. Go to different blogs to see who folks are using on the net.

I’ve seen some nice engagement rings in Walmart’s jewelry counter for less than $200, even one for less than $100. Their online site doesn’t show the same merchandise as in the store, so I recommend going to the store.
If your budget is a little bigger, you might look at the department store chains’ jewelry counters (Sears, JC Penny, Kohl’s, etc.). Some have reasonable prices with more variety on settings than Walmart, but the "higher end" jewelry is priced much more than you should have to pay for it. The problem is, whenever you pay for the "ring" (the diamond and the setting already assembled) the retailer has likely added an additional markup to the overall price, knowing you aren’t going to be able to inspect your diamond carefully or comparison shop the entire ring against entire rings at other retailers. The price may be 30% higher than if you select the setting and the diamond seperately and have the jeweler assemble them.
I also highly recommend using a diamond search engine, like http://www.diamondpriceguru.com/. You can either input your price range and see what comes up, or you can input the characteristics that are important to you (color grade, clarity grade, carat weight, shape, etc.) and then narrow the search until you see something in your budget range. That search engine collects diamond prices from about 10 different retailers each day (including big names like Blue Nile and budget-respecting places like Amazon.com), so you get to see all their prices for the same diamond.
I hope this helps.
